» Divine Family: {mother & father} probably Ethliu and Elatha, but in some versions Danú, Étaín or Brigit as his mother and the Dagda as his father; {spouse} Etan; {siblings} possibly the Dagda, Lugh; {children} Tuireann, Delbaeth, Cairpré, possibly also MacCuill, MacCecht and MacGrené

» Mythology: Ogma was the Celtic god of eloquence, education, literature, runes and writing. He is credited with the creation of the eponymous Ogham alphabet. Sometimes, he is referred to as Cermait, meaning "honey-mouthed," a reflection of his speaking prowess. Among his epithets is also "Grianainech," meaning "Sunny-faced," which may refer either to his perpetual good humor, or possibly link him to solar deities of similar nature. He is frequently associated with the Gaulish god Ogmios, and he is often placed in a triad known as a trí dée dána with Lugh and the Dagda as one of three "gods of skill."

His wife was Etan, daughter of Diancécht, god of medicine. His son Cairpré was the patron of bards, and his satire was so powerful that it helped the Tuatha Dé Danann overthrow Bress from the throne. He was also father to MacCuill, MacCecht and MacGrené, the three Danann kings who ruled Ireland during the Milesian invasion.

He was also a professional warrior, and one of the seven champions of the Tuatha Dé Danann, and their official strongman. Sometimes this meant that he was among their favored warriors, such as at the first battle of Mag Tuired, when the Tuatha Dé Danann took over Ireland from the Fir Bolg who inhabited it at the time.

At other times, he would be given the task of collecting firewood or moving other large objects for the godly community, which was common for him after Bress became king and enslaved the Tuatha Dé Danann, forcing them to earn their livings through menial labor. However, during this time, so little sustenance was provided by Bress that the Tuatha Dé Danann starved, and in this weakened state, Ogma could only carry a third of the load he could usually manage, causing them to suffer not only from insufficient food, but insufficient warmth as well.

When Bress was overthrown and Nuada regained the position of king among the Tuatha Dé Danann, Ogma was among the first to be named as Nuada's champions once again. When Lugh (often considered Ogma's half-brother) came to their court, seeking a position in the ranks of the Tuatha Dé Danann, he was a very real threat to Ogma's place among them. To challenge Lugh, Ogma lifted and hurled a great flagstone out of Tara with one hand that ordinarily would require eighty oxen to move. Lugh, however, answered this challenge by hurling the rock back. Ultimately, both were allowed to remain at the court.

At the second battle of Mag Tuired, Nuada again named Ogma as his lead champion in the fight, though this time under Lugh's command. Ogma swore to repel the Fomorian king, Indech, as well as Indech's bodyguard, and to defeat a third of the enemy forces. During the battle, he did find and take Orna, the sword of the Fomorian king Tethra, which recounted the deeds done with it when unsheathed. According to some, this act ultimately cost Ogma his life, when during the battle Ogma and Indech both fall in single combat. However, there is some confusion in the texts as in Cath Maige Tuired, Ogma, Lugh and the Dagda pursue the Fomorians after the battle to recover the harp of Uaitne, the Dagda's harper. They followed the Fomors into their underwater palace, and the Dagda played three songs with it once it was found hanging on a wall--the last of which was a lullaby, and the three snuck out with the harp while the Fomors slept.

Eventually, mortals were able to overthrow and exile the Tuatha Dé Danann, and in searching for new places to call home, they eventually were each given their own barrows or hillocks, and Ogma's was called Airceltrai. For many of the Tuatha Dé Danann, these hills later became their tombs as humanity forgot about them.

» Occupation: High school English teacher and coach for boys’ wrestling and weightlifting
» Currently Residing In: Kansas City, Missouri
» Ability: Ogma-reborn has a genius-level IQ, and an encyclopedic capacity for gaining and retaining knowledge--particularly anything having to do with language, which he picks up with superhuman ease. He is also unusually well-spoken and persuasive, and has surprisingly nice penmanship. He is also considerably stronger and hardier than most men of his size and build.

» History: Ogma was reborn in Spain in 1575 as Domingo Reyes, the son of a clerk to a Spanish bishop. He was well-educated, often spending time in monastic libraries, and loved to read. As he got older, he often aided his father as a copyist, copying and illuminating various ancient works. He did a great deal of travelling and bookhunting, visiting France, England, Italy and Holland, among other places. He did marry and had several children, and lived to a ripe age of 75.

On May 2, 1972, he was reborn as Alan Cleary, "Big Al" often to his friends, in New York City. He had some traditional Irish and Pictish ancestry on his father's side (from which he learned to speak Gaelic), but also some African and Samoan ancestry on his mother's side. Nonetheless, he and his younger brother Charles were all-American boys. They went to public schools, and participated in lots of extracurricular activities. Alan in particular shone in school, both academically and athletically, participating in football, wrestling, weightlifting, debate, the school newspaper and the National Honors Society, among other things. He especially excelled anywhere language, literature and composition were concerned, picking up French, German and Spanish by the time he graduated high school, and was smart enough he could easily have skipped a few grades. However, he chose not to so that he could continue participating in activities outside of class along with his friends.

Alan earned scholarships, both athletic and academic, to attend Northwestern University, where he double majored in English and Classical Languages (where he learned Ancient Greek, Latin and Hebrew, and picked up a couple more along the way for fun. While he was at college, he fully realized the truth of who he actually was, but never made a big deal out of it, keeping the fact that he was Ogma reborn quiet--although he did get his first tattoos to commemorate the discovery and it sparked a deep-rooted fascination in mythology from all over the world. During his college days, he also met a bright young music major named Carmen, and they married the summer after he completed his bachelor's program. He proceeded to graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania, earning a Masters in literature. Along the way, he and his wife welcomed their son Devin on July 8, 1995. They would also welcome their daughter, Harper, on November 22, 2000, while Alan was pursuing his PhD in linguistics there (and, of course, continuing to pick up languages).

Philadelphia was not an easy town in which to raise a family, so Alan moved them back to the Midwest, eventually settling down in Kansas City. Although he was brilliant and well-educated, and could have chosen an illustrious career in a proverbial ivory tower, Alan found his true joy in shaping young minds and bodies, and decided to earn his teaching certificates for high school English and ESL/ELL. He also became a coach for several boys' sports, typically favoring the wrestling and weight-lifting teams. His wife, meanwhile, taught music.

Tragedy would come in the spring of 2005, however. Alan was out-of-town for a regional tournament, having brought his children along with him on the trip, and he expected that his wife would meet him there. She never made it. Carmen was killed in an car accident on the way there, her body burned practically beyond recognition. Alan was deeply grieved, but continued to carry on as best he could as a single father. As his son entered high school, Alan also became more formally Devin's teacher and coach--a role he'd played anyway ever since his son was small--but he does his best to maintain fair treatment of his son among the other students.

» Personality: The first things anyone usually notices about the reborn-Ogma are his size and his perpetually sunny smile. He is the very embodiment of the "gentle giant," always cheerful, polite, well-spoken, and often just a little goofy. He has a sparkling wit and sense of humor, with a hearty laugh and an infectious optimism. He is both verbose and persuasive when he speaks, whether he's giving a lecture or a pep talk, but few would ever call him boring. Although he is aware of his great physical strength, he does his best to only use it for helpful purposes (carrying heavy objects, for example) rather than anything violent or destructive, unless otherwise necessary.

This is not to say there isn't a temper lurking under that jovial demeanor, although it's hard to make Ogma-reborn genuinely angry. He has a fiercely competitive spirit, and his loyalties run deep. He won't back down from a challenge nor any insult brooked against either himself or anyone he cares about, sometimes to the point of being foolhardy about it. You mess with someone he loves, and you mess with Ogma--a mistake you won't be likely to make twice. When he wants to, he can be very intimidating. If he is beaten, however, he accepts defeat with grace and good sportsmanship, vowing to work hard so as to succeed the next time. He does have a serious, sometimes even morose, side as well, even if it's rarely seen under his constant good humor. He is comfortable and confident in his masculinity, although he does tend to keep his more negative emotions hidden from view.

Ogma-reborn believes in cultivating both sound body and mind, and likes to lead by example. He exercises daily, enjoys being outdoors whenever possible, eats a mostly-healthy diet (though he does have a considerable appetite), and is constantly learning something new or working to better himself somehow. He espouses the ideal of being both "a doer of deeds and a speaker of words." He considers a day wasted if he hasn't discovered at least five new things over its course. He loves culture in all its forms, but is especially fond of languages, literature, music and athletics. He isn't a very skilled musician himself, but nearly always has music on in the background, and he will read just about anything he can get his hands on. Although he is definitely an intellectual, he is not snobbish. He is equally at home at a wine-and-cheese party where he discusses the ideals of the Sophists as he is talking sports over pizza and beer. He especially loves to share his ideas and discoveries with other people, and has a marvelous creativity for bringing his lessons and explanations to life.

He is a devoted family man, and will always put the needs of his children first. This isn't to say that he spoils them, but he is a doting father. Since the death of his wife, he has not spent much time looking for a new partner, preferring instead to dedicate himself to his kids, job and other obligations. It doesn't take much for him to make a lady swoon, though, if he tries, with his good looks and easygoing charm, though he will always treat a woman with respect that borders on chivalry.

» Other Notes:
Having dedicated a great deal of study to learning languages, Ogma knows Ancient Greek (Attic and Koine), Latin, Hebrew, Gaelic, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Japanese, American Sign Language, and is in the process of learning Russian.

He is decidedly straight, no higher than a 1 on the Kinsey scale.

His son Devin is played by Tristan Wilds, and his daughter Harper is played by Madison Pettis.

» Sample Journal:

Today is going to be a good day, I can tell. It's the championship meet, and the guys are ready. They've worked really hard for this, and even if we don't take the championship (which I'm sure we will anyway), I have never been prouder of them. Devin, especially, has been pushing himself and really applying everything he's been learning. Everyone has been amazingly supportive: the teachers, the parents, the students, even the community. All the drives we've had, everyone working together to make this happen... I seriously have the best kids any coach or dad could ask for. It's too bad Carmen isn't here to see it, but I'm sure, wherever she is, she's smiling down on us too.

» Sample Log: "Hey, Coach!"

Alan looked up from his clipboard at the familiar call and walked over to his student with his usual smile. "Yes, Dave, what can I do for you?"

The boy shifted a little self-consciously, but seemed to ease when he saw that beatific smile. "Coach... I'm just not sure I'm getting this hold right. I know the other guys can do it, and I want to be just as good when we have our meet."

Alan nodded.
"You're doing fine. Let me show you how to fine-tune the technique," he offered, and promptly spent the next fifteen minutes helping him tweak it toward perfection. "There, now I think you've gotten the hang of it. Keep up with your strength training, and you'll be in great shape for competing."

"Thanks, Coach. So, you really think I've got a chance?" Dave asked hopefully.

"Dave, you are a great kid. You're smart, you come in here every day and work your tail off trying to improve. And I see that improvement coming day after day and week after week. You've got a chance, because you've earned it. Everything you do has been getting you closer and closer to earning a top spot, and when the time comes, if you show them everything you've got, then there's nothing stopping you--nothing. So, just get out there and give it your best!" Alan said, beaming proudly.

Dave grinned back. "Thanks, Coach."

"You bet," Alan said, and blew his whistle. "Okay, guys! 5 minute break--get some water, take some deep breaths, and then let's get back to being winners!"
